How’s your weekend coming along? Ours has been absolutely exhilarating. It seems like wedding season is upon us and we’re glad to be part of it! Last night one of the weddings that we catered was at one of our favorite venues in all of Southern California, The Hummingbird Nest Ranch in the gorgeous Santa Susana area of Simi Valley. We have the privilege of being showcased as one of the preferred venues at this sprawling estate and so we are definitely no strangers to this breathtaking location.
For this occasion we were situated in the Sitting Bull area of the compound, which is essentially a repurposed barn. You can tell this building once housed majestic animals such as show horses or prized cattle. Today it’s been cleaned up, paved over and wonderfully restyled into one of the most beautiful places to hold a wedding reception.
A few days ago we were a bit concerned that rain was going to put a damper on the festivities, but last night it seems like Mother Nature decided to keep all the precipitation up North. As a result, we were graced with an idyllic weather backdrop that no one could have anticipated. The skies were blue and there were a few clouds here and there, but definitely not a drop in the sky.
Because of the sudden, but good news that we were in for fantastic climate, some items got shuffled around the property for the better. Much of the reception was originally going to be indoors but thankfully the celebration was both inside the barn facility and outdoors as well. So, it was great to be able to enjoy cool perfect Springtime weather and then duck inside once things got a bit cool.
For this occasion we had the pleasure of serving up several types of appetizers. More than just a terrific way to soak up all the cocktails on an empty stomach, they were also a wonderful way to kick off the festivities. On hand were some of our finest selections such as our savory Albondigas (or “meatballs”), Espadas de Camarones (“Shrimp Skewers”) and Rebanadas de Uva (“Grape Crostinis”).
Guests were gobbling up the appetizers almost as fast as we were sending them out! Fortunately we had plenty to go around and we received wonderful feedback from the guests. But, there was more!
The appetizers were actually served immediately after the exchange of vows in the pool area of the estate, not too far from the main barnhouse. So, once they were all scarfed down the guests then proceeded to the main reception hall. That’s where it was showtime.
Moments before the guests started to approach the main facility, we were hard at work pressing and grilling fresh tortillas. All tacos came wrapped in these delights, so we were sure they were in for a wonderful night. Then, we started to grill all the other principal menu items such as savory carne asada, succulent shrimp tacos and terrific carnitas.
At first the newlyweds were the first to approach the cart and enjoy the first plate of tacos and sides for the evening and then eventually the rest of the party came up to the grill one by one. The entire taco service was scheduled for a couple of hours, but the entire 100+ guest list was served in about an hour. Once again we received some tremendous feedback from the guests, which one served to pump the adrenaline and help keep the good times rolling.
It was a tremendous honor to have served everyone last night and we had a blast! Many of the attendees came from all parts of the country and some from other parts of the world, so it was a great opportunity to showcase them some of Southern California’s finest cuisine. A huge congratulations goes out to the newlyweds! We greatly appreciate the chance to serve you and your loved ones. We had a terrific time and look forward to serving you again soon. Buen provecho!
