Taco Catering An Open House at La Cañada Flintridge
The rain lashed against the windshield with relentless fury, transforming the scenic drive to La Cañada Flintridge into a hazy watercolor painting. My partner, Martin, and I, seasoned veterans of the taco catering circuit, navigated the winding roads with practiced ease, the rhythmic drumming of the rain a constant companion.
Our destination for this particular adventure was an open house – a unique setting for our usual vibrant, open-air culinary experience. The home, bathed in the cool, pre-winter light filtering through the rain-streaked windows, stood as a testament to possibility, its polished wood floors and airy spaces offering a glimpse into a life yet to be lived. However, the weather gods, it seemed, had different plans. The steady downpour rendered an outdoor setup impractical, and we were graciously ushered into the spacious garage – our unexpected culinary oasis for the afternoon.
Transforming the Garage
Undeterred by the change in scenery, we set about transforming the utilitarian space into a haven of aromatic delight. The rhythmic hum of dehumidifiers battling the dampness provided a steady backdrop as the clinking of cutlery and the sizzle of seasoned meats filled the air. Vibrant splashes of color, courtesy of our fresh toppings selection, added a touch of vibrancy to the scene, creating a sensory symphony that rivaled the monotonous drumming of the rain on the roof.
Classic Flavors and Refreshing Delights
For this particular taco catering event, our menu boasted two classic crowd-pleasers, pollo asado – succulent, slow-roasted chicken marinated to perfection – and carne asada – thin slices of skirt steak grilled to a smoky, flavorful finish. Alongside these culinary stars, we offered a plethora of fresh toppings, each a testament to the vibrant spirit of Mexican cuisine. Chopped onions and cilantro added a refreshing zest, while the vibrant pico de gallo, with its burst of sweetness and acidity, awakened the taste buds. For those seeking a creamier experience, our creamy jalapeño salsa offered a delightful counterpoint to the smoky richness of the meats.
However, the true star of the show, at least for one particular guest, was our selection of homemade agua frescas. The vibrant pink watermelon agua fresca, a refreshing blend of sun-ripened watermelon, tart lime, and just a touch of sugar, offered a burst of summery sweetness. The creamy, cinnamon-infused horchata, a traditional Mexican rice-based drink, provided a comforting warmth that perfectly complemented the savory tacos.
Unexpected Connections
The open house buzzed with activity, a captivating blend of curious potential buyers and enthusiastic taco enthusiasts. The irresistible aroma of our freshly prepared food, a warm counterpoint to the damp chill outside, proved impossible to resist. Guests, drawn by the enticing fragrance, gravitated towards our impromptu taco station, their initial surprise at the unexpected culinary treat quickly transforming into delighted smiles.
A couple of the guests were delighted and surprised to see taco catering during an open house. One guest came with there family to check out the property and see if it was right for them. As soon as they saw the taco cart the kids where shocked and happy, one of them exclaimed ” They have tacos!” to her mom. Then they ran up to the taco cart as if they had just entered a candy store. The menu was carne asada and pollo asado tacos, but one girl wanted one with some melted cheese so I offered a quesadilla. Her face lit up with happiness and she said “Yes!”, so I made her the best quesadilla I could possibly make.
One particular guest, a silver-haired gentleman with a twinkle in his eye, became a regular visitor to our taco haven. Each time he approached, a warm smile gracing his lips, he would request a cup of our horchata, his appreciation evident in every word. He spoke of simpler times, of childhood memories of his grandmother’s kitchen, and of the way our horchata brought back a flood of comforting familiarity, a testament to the power of food to transcend time and connect us to cherished memories.
A Reminder of Food’s Power
As the day progressed, the rain began to taper off, the once heavy downpour softening into a gentle drizzle. We packed up our equipment, leaving behind the lingering aroma of spices and the satisfied smiles of our guests. The house remained unsold, but for the few hours we were there, it became a haven of warmth, laughter, and the joy of shared food.
The experience served as a powerful reminder that food transcends its physical form. It becomes a bridge, connecting individuals from all walks of life and fostering a sense of community. In this instance, a rainy day open house transformed into a culinary odyssey, a testament to the unifying power of a well-made taco and a refreshing glass of horchata.
