A SOHO Taco Adventure in Van Nuys

Southern California, with its balmy sunshine and endless summer days, often lulls one into a sense of perpetual warmth. This past Saturday, however, Mother Nature decided to throw a curveball. Van Nuys, usually a haven of golden rays, found itself shrouded in a cold, unrelenting rain. But even the dreariest weather couldn’t dampen the celebratory spirit of a surprise birthday party, and for this momentous occasion, SOHO Taco rose to the challenge, proving once again that their gourmet taco catering transcends the elements.

The Tacos

As the pitter-patter of rain played a steady rhythm on the canopy of our strategically placed tent, the aroma of sizzling carne asada, pollo asado, and al pastor wafted through the air, a sensory invitation to a south-of-the-border fiesta. The carne asada, marinated to tender perfection, boasted a complex interplay of savory and smoky notes. Each bite was a plethora of textures, the yielding meat a delightful contrast to the crisp char from the grill.

The pollo asado, succulent and flavorful, provided a milder counterpoint. But the undisputed star of the show was the al pastor. The marinated pork, the crown jewel of taco fillings, arrived with a flourish – caramelized to perfection, its edges tinged with a beautiful char.

The Toppings

SOHO Taco understands that the magic of a taco lies not just in the filling, but in the interplay of textures and flavors that come together with each bite. The spread of toppings was a testament to this philosophy. Freshly chopped cilantro and diced red onion added a vibrant pop of color and a welcome touch of brightness. The guacamole, a revelation of creamy avocado with just the right amount of lime juice and a hint of salt, proved to be the perfect complement to every taco. And for those seeking an extra kick, two salsas were offered. a fiery green salsa that tantalized the taste buds with the spice from roasted jalapeños and a mild red roasted tomato salsa that added a touch of smokiness. This plethora of fresh ingredients allowed everyone to craft their ideal taco, a testament to the versatility and depth of flavor that SOHO Taco brings to the table (or, in this case, the catering cart).

The Sides and Mini Bean and Cheese Burritos

No taco feast is complete without a variety of comforting sides. SOHO Taco delivered on this front with aplomb. Refried beans, perfectly smooth and seasoned with just the right amount of spice, offered a warm and satisfying base. The Spanish rice, fluffy and flavorful, provided a delightful textural contrast. But the true scene-stealers were the mini bean and cheese burritos. These bite-sized bundles of comfort, filled with a creamy bean mixture and melted cheese, were devoured with gusto. Each bite was a warm hug, a perfect antidote to the chill in the air.

We had a guest come up to the cart asking if there was any vegan options. The menu was filled with meat options, but there was the sides and the fresh made tortilla chips. He made himself 2 bean tacos topped off with cilantro and purple onion then added the fresh tortilla chips on the side. To top it all off he added the roasted red tomato salsa, it was a vegan masterpiece. The rice is vegetarian but SOHO taco can easily make it vegan upon request.

That same guest later came back and make himself a plate of vegan nachos with the tortilla chips, beans, cilantro, onion, red salsa, and squeezed a lime at the end.

As the rain continued its relentless assault outside the tent, the spirit of the party remained undimmed. The food, a delicious testament to SOHO Taco’s culinary prowess, played a pivotal role in creating this warm and joyous atmosphere. The strategic early arrival and discreet parking of the catering van ensured a seamless surprise, adding to the delight of the unsuspecting guests.

The universal praise for the food, particularly the al pastor and the mini bean and cheese burritos, was a testament to the quality of ingredients and the culinary expertise of SOHO Taco. The sight of guests returning for seconds and thirds was a symphony of satisfaction, a culinary victory under unexpected circumstances. It was a night where good company, delicious food, and the indomitable spirit of celebration combined to create a memory that will linger long after the last raindrop has fallen.
