Yesterday was Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer. Usually that means it’s back to school and the end of those fantastic beach parties.
And, what better way to commemorate another memorable summer season then with a little recap of the seaside event that we just did recently?
Not too long ago we had the great pleasure of catering for a beautiful engagement party at the Del Mar Surf Station and we had a GREAT time. Check out this short video that showcases just a snippet of the festivities:
Located in the gorgeous seaside resort town of Del Mar, this Del Mar Surf Station is a decommissioned train station that used to serve travelers between San Diego and Orange County on a regular basis.
And, then one day Amtrak sometime in the mid-90’s, Amtrak wanted to expand its services and increase ridership in the area. There was even a heated debate in the community since some folks were ecstatic about enhancing more public transportation in the area. But, others weren’t too wild about the added traffic and congestion.
Then, after all was said and done, Amtrak felt that it wasn’t worth it to stick around there and decided to build a larger, more accommodating station up in Solana Beach. You can read more about his fascinating historic site on Ipstenu.org and on WayMarking.com. Pretty interesting stuff!
Today the venue is privately owned and no longer serves at train station. But, that hasn’t removed any of the charm and allure of the location. In fact, you can even witness trains whizzing by in hurry to meet up at the next destination!
For this occasion our hard-working crew members Oscar and Irving drove down the 5 Freeway South to help grill up a fantastic feast for a wonderful engagement party. They loaded up the van in Santa Ana and made their way down South to the heart of the festivities.
We set up the cart next to the train tracks which was a bit startling at first since the trains rushing by was only a few feet from the backs of our crew!
But, after a few trains you just get used to it. So, they fired up the grill and assembled the ingredients for a celebratory feast.
To help kick off the festivities, the menu called for some of our finest appetizers such as our savory albongdigas, which is savory meatballs stuffed with chopped dates for that wonderful salty/sweet combination.
Then, we followed that up with another popular treat, our exquisite sopesitos. We hand-make each one of these traditional masa appetizers back at HQ and then we stuff them with some of our finest ingredients for another wonderful appetizer.
Next up it was time to serve up the main course. And, today’s menu called for some of our very best tacos such as our tantalizing carne asada, succulent pollo asado, sumptuous veggie tacos and phenomenal camarones.
As Oscar and Irving tossed around the taco ingredients on the grill, the hosts made their announcements and expressed their congratulations to the fiancees. It must have been challenging trying to concentrate on the speeches as as the guys filled the air with hypnotic aromas emanating from the taco cart.
To help everyone wash down their meals and quench their thirsts, the crew also brought with them a fresh made aguas fresca de sandia, made with farm fresh watermelon, top quality sugar and lots of love.
Once the speeches concluded it was chow time. That’s when the guests rushed the taco cart like an Amtrak train headed to L.A. One by one everyone lined up an placed their order. Each hungry guest was able to order as many tacos as they wanted and no one held back. Good times!
After Oscar or Irving handed the plates of tacos to each guest, they proceeded to add their toppings and condiments from our rich selections of flavorful salsas and farm fresh produce. This helped everyone custom design their own masterpiece taco and they looked amazing!
The partying continued well into the evening as more trains zoomed by, the sun started to set and the decorative lights started to twinkle. It couldn’t have been more romantic!
We had an absolutely fantastic time and it was a sheer honor to have been selected to be part of the festivities. We greatly appreciate the opportunity!
