West Coast Taco & Beer Festival. A Los Angeles Culinary Adventure

Los Angeles, a city where sunshine is practically guaranteed, decided to throw us a curveball. The West Coast Taco & Beer Festival dawned under a blanket of gloomy skies, with a persistent drizzle adding a touch of grit to the otherwise vibrant Union Station setting. But amidst the dampness, something magical unfolded.

As “Danny,” the proud grill master of Soho Taco, alongside my trusty crew – Rico, Johnny, and Betty – we embarked on a four hour whirlwind of taco catering unlike any other. Our spot, nestled amongst seven other food vendors, served as a beacon of warmth and flavor. While the rain pattered down, the aroma of sizzling carne asada and fresh tortillas wafted through the air, drawing in festivalgoers like moths to a flame.

Los Angeles Taco & Beer Festival

A Beacon of Warmth in a Damp Setting

Our menu was simple yet sublime. carne asada tacos, their smoky perfection accentuated by the handmade tortillas, and gourmet veggie tacos, a vibrant explosion of flavor and texture topped with a chipotle sour cream. Toppings glistened under the tent: cilantro, a vibrant emerald green; red onions, limes, sunshine yellow and tart; salsas, fiery green and deep red, their aromas adding another layer to the already intoxicating scent.

The line stretched before us, seemingly impervious to the weather. The rhythm of our service became a well-oiled machine. Rico expertly charring the meat, Johnny assembling tacos with practiced precision, Betty greeting customers with her infectious smile, and me, orchestrating the dance. And dance we did! For four hours, we served nonstop, the line barely pausing for breath. The satisfaction on our customers’ faces was our fuel, their compliments, the music to our ears.

Shared Bites and Unforgettable Moments

What transpired that day transcended mere taco catering. It was a culinary communion, a shared experience that brought people together despite the dreary backdrop. Smiles blossomed under rain-splattered faces as they savored the taste of Los Angeles – bold, diverse, and undeniably delicious. The scent of sizzling meat mingled with the laughter of friends, the clinking of beer bottles, and the lively festival music, creating a plethora of sights, sounds, and aromas.

There were moments that etched themselves onto the fabric of our memory. The look of pure joy on the face of a person taking their first bite of a veggie taco, a kaleidoscope of textures and flavors exploding on their palate. The weary traveler, seeking comfort in a familiar taste, finding solace in the warmth of a carne asada taco. The vendors from inside the station, drawn by the irresistible allure of our offerings, becoming our customers for a stolen moment. These vignettes, strung together, painted a picture of shared humanity, united by the simple pleasure of good food.

Rain or Shine, We Bring the Flavor

As the festival drew to a close, the rain finally subsided, leaving behind a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie. We packed up, our bodies tired but our spirits soaring. We had weathered the storm, literally and metaphorically, and emerged stronger, our bond as a team solidified. The West Coast Taco & Beer Festival, despite the gloomy skies, had been a resounding success, a testament to the power of good food, good company, and the unwavering human spirit.

It was a day we at Soho Taco won’t soon forget, a day that solidified our love for taco catering and our love for Los Angeles, the city that always finds a way to shine, even when the sky refuses to cooperate.
